REMOVAL FIRM HELPS VOLUNTEERING PROGRAMME GET MOVING

Charity calls for volunteers as demand increases for supporting people in distress

 Norwich Samaritans has been given a welcome boost by local removal company Hadley & Ottaway, who have raised £9,000 during the past year.

The money will go towards a new recruitment drive for volunteers – much-needed by the charity as the number of people needing their support increases across the UK.

Hadley & Ottaway’s Managing, Director David Galer said, “We wanted to support the Samaritans as we knew just how in demand the service was after the pandemic and now the cost of living crisis.

“It’s been a hard time for many, especially those suffering from mental health issues, isolation and loneliness. Samaritans have been there for anyone and everyone who is going through a tough time, and their aim is that there will always be someone to listen. The money we raised was our way of being there for them.”

Hadley & Ottaway’s generous support will enable Norwich Samaritans to start a volunteer recruitment drive, and make the most of the extra space that Varah House provides.

James Ellis Norwich Samaritans Director said, “Volunteering is a wonderful way for people to use their skills, feel valued and create friendships in the Norfolk community.

“Nationally the demand for Samaritans service continues to increase and the charity is developing more ways in which it can support callers. To meet this demand it is anticipated that Samaritans will need many more volunteers nationally.

“Locally, we already provide support for around 40,000 people. By growing our volunteering base from 200 to 300 people, we will be doing our bit for the national effort.”

Norwich Samaritans supports people through its 24/7 helpline and email service, as well as hundreds of visitors to is branch every year and through its outreach activity.

They visit local schools, universities, businesses and workplaces, and have been working with local healthcare trusts and many other organisations.

Norwich Samaritans has been fundraising hard through the pandemic to raise money for much needed renovations to the branch in St Stephen’s Square, where it has been based since it was founded in 1964.

The Victorian building was facing severe structural issues and the charity’s home was deemed no longer fit for purpose. The £750,000 appeal to renovate Varah House has all gone to plan and progress is ongoing, with the opening of the renovated building being expected in September this year.

The newly renovated Varah House will allow Norwich Samaritans the opportunity to further grow its volunteer base of 200 which helps roughly 40,000 people every year. Another 100 volunteers could support a further 30,000 people.
